Is having a huge downline the same as being a good marketer?

Time and time again, I’ll get a hotshot offline network marketer who calls me up wanting me to sign up into his/her business just because I know how to do online marketing.

Just like in any business, there are those who are the real deals, and then there are those who are posers, people pretending to be something they’re not.

I had a lady last week wanting me to sign up into her downline, but when I questioned her if she was doing this business successfuly on the internet, she said yes.

I returned with, “OK.  Great!  What marketing technique are you using on the internet?”

She came back with “social media marketing using Facebook.”

“Ok.  Great!  What else?”  I replied.

“I’m also making a list of friends and family and e-mailing them about my nice products and services.  I’m also tapping passersby every Saturday morning at the chamber of commerce,” she said.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather sleep in on a Saturday morning instead of getting up to meet strangers at the local chamber of commerce.  Til this day, I would rather die than to approach a stranger to sell them on my product, service, or opportunity.

“OK.  What else?” I replied.  Then there was silence……

My conversation continued with this, “I don’t mean to offend you, but it seems to me that you don’t know a lot about marketing.”

“Are you kidding me?  I have a huge downline to prove it to you, and I make 6 figures a year,” she barked.  Needless to say, she hung up the phone in frustration with me as she failed to convince me that she was a good marketer.  Hence, I classifed her as a poser.

Network marketers who profess that having a huge downline IS the same as being a good marketer are not really giving you all the facts.  Therefore, the answer to my title question is NO.

Let me illustrate.  You can still have a huge downline and a 6-figure income in network marketing IF the strategies of “bugging total strangers at the chamber of commerce” or “dialing up friends and family” WORK FOR YOU.  But if you are like many experienced failures in multi-level marketing (MLM), you don’t want to repeat those SAME techniques and want to know if there is any other strategies that you can learn.

If your sponsor can’t show you any more than those 3 techniques I’ve mentioned, chances are he/she won’t be a good leader for you in this business.

Sometimes, I’ll get sponsors whose last ditch effort will be to utilize the “checkwaving marketing strategy” to entice me to sign up with them.  My advice if you come across such posers….DON’T FALL FOR IT.  DO NOT LET HIS 6-FIGURE PER YEAR EGO GET TO YOUR HEAD!  Too many newbies in network marketing make that mistake of joining a sponsor simply because he made $150,000 in MLM last year.  Again, DON’T FALL FOR IT. He/she is only using that status to recruit you.  Besides, most MLM companies discourage their distributors from boasting about their earnings with their primary network marketing business.

Instead, you really should be MORE FOCUSED on whether your sponsor can show YOU the NUMEROUS ways to get prospects for your MLM so that you will have an arsenal of tools to pick and choose from such that if one or two strategies in marketing don’t work for you, you can choose another strategy.

If you are like me, I love to do internet marketing because I don’t have to leave my home to recruit prospects.  Everything is done ON THE INTERNET.
