The truth about SEO and network marketing

Hi, guys. This is Marco Abanico with MLM Television.

I talked a little bit about search marketing in an earlier video and the truth about free web traffic. In this video, I want to give you a little more insight into the reality of using search engine optimization or SEO for your network marketing business. This is because there is a lot of misinformation about SEO in most lead generation or traffic courses.

The implication is usually that it is not that hard to set up a website and get a top rank on Google in less than a week or two. SEO can be very effective but it is not quick and is not instantaneous. Google even warns marketers to stay away from scam artists making this kind of claim.

For evidence-based marketers, the real question is “can you use SEO for your network marketing business?”, and “can you rank on page 1 or at least highly in Google for major keyword?” The answer to that is yes. But there are factors that you need to consider if you expect your SEO efforts to deliver this. And this is the part that is most often left out of traffic courses.

The problem is that ignoring these factors will make that $500+ you paid for one of those courses seem like a drop in the bucket. The biggest issue, and indeed the root of all factors I am going to share, is actually competition. The key to the success of the entire network marketing industry is being able to bypass the competition of traditional businesses.

So anytime you see heavy competition in network marketing, you can be sure that most people are losing. So let us look at this in terms of SEO. Take the keyword phrase ‘”network marketing” as an example. If you run a search on that term, you are going to find that there are 561 million pages that show up. That is a lot of pages, and these are all pages you are going to have to compete with if you are going to rank for this particular term.

This means that there are 10 or 20 real winners, maybe even a hundred pages that get some measurable traffic from this term and 560,999,900 pages that do not. And here is the issue, if you want to get a top ranking for this term, it is likely that the sites that are already ranking highly are already optimizing their sites in some way or another. And these sites have probably been online for a long time. They have figured out their own formula that gets them ranked because, even according to Google, while there are general rules, there is no one-size-fits-all formula.

So these top-ranking sites definitely have a head start on you. They probably have a ton of natural links which means link diversity, and they probably have a ton of content. Optimized or not, it still counts, and like I said, they figured out what works over the course of years. SEO can provide the pay-off certainly but it is pretty unrealistic to expect a quick pay-off from your SEO efforts. Unless you have a huge budget and a team of people working for you, it is unlikely that you are going to find a lot of quick success ranking for any popular keyword.

For this reason, web and SEO should be something that you pursue AT THE SAME TIME you prospect in more proven and duplicatable ways, like contacting prospects or running advertisements. This is something I have been encouraging network marketers to do.
