How to Leverage the Internet to Avoid the Trap

The internet allows you to shift from Outbound Prospecting (chasing people) to Inbound Attraction Marketing (getting the right people to find you).

1. Master “Attraction Marketing”

Instead of leading with your company name or “Join My Team,” lead with value.

  • Identify a Niche: If you sell health products, don’t just post product photos. Post “5 Tips for Better Sleep” or “How to Read a Nutrition Label.”
  • The Goal: Position yourself as a consultant or a problem-solver. When you provide value, people follow you for your expertise, not because they feel obligated to support your new hobby.

2. Build a Personal Brand, Not a Corporate One

Your social media profile should look like a human lives there, not a corporate brochure.

  • The 80/20 Rule: 80% of your content should be lifestyle, education, or humor. Only 20% should be a direct “Call to Action” (CTA) regarding your business.
  • Curiosity Posts: Instead of saying “I love [Brand Name] Energy Drink! Click here to buy!”, try: “I finally found a way to survive the 3:00 PM slump without feeling jittery. Who else needs a mid-day reboot?” This invites conversation rather than an immediate “No.”

3. Create a Lead Generation “Funnel”

The biggest mistake in old-school MLM is doing all the work manually. The internet allows for automation:

  • Lead Magnets: Create a simple freebie (e.g., a “Busy Mom’s 10-Minute Skincare Guide”) in exchange for an email address.
  • Email Marketing: Use an automated sequence to “warm up” these leads. By the time you actually talk to them, they already know and trust you.
  • Targeting: Use social media ads or SEO to find people who are already searching for what you offer. It is much easier to sell to a “starving crowd” than to convince your skeptical cousin.

4. Join “Tribes” Authentically

Don’t join Facebook groups just to spam your link—you’ll be banned in minutes.

  • The Strategy: Join groups related to your niche (e.g., Keto Dieting, DIY Home Decor, or Entrepreneurship).
  • The Action: Answer questions and be genuinely helpful. People will naturally click on your profile to see who you are, leading them into your “Attraction” ecosystem.

Comparison: Old School vs. New School

FeatureOld School (NFL Club Path)New School (Internet Leverage)
Lead SourceFriends & Family (Limited)The Global Internet (Infinite)
ApproachChasing/PitchingAttracting/Providing Value
ToolsCoffee shop meetings / 3-way callsSocial Media / Funnels / Blogs
ScalabilityLow (You eventually run out of people)High (Your content works 24/7)

The Secret: The internet turns your business from a “pestering” model into a “professional” model. When you stop looking for customers and start looking for people with a problem you can solve, you never have to worry about running out of people to talk to.
