What is Prospecting in Network Marketing

You are now a distributor of a big multi-level marketing company. One of the techniques they teach you at the company seminar is prospecting. Those of you who become distributors of a network marketing company may find that prospecting as another fish line to throw into the water as a supplement to your online network marketing recruiting activities.

If you find that you are an extroverted type person, then prospecting for that next person in your downline is for you. So what exactly is prospecting? Doctors and lawyers use this technique all the time. So do successful online network marketers.

What is prospecting?

Prospecting is defined by:

  1. Any activity you are involved in to position yourself in front of a prospect with the intent to….
  2. Assess, discover, inquire, and educate so that you can…
  3. Determine if both you and the prospect click, and your relationship with that prospect is worth pursuing. This, in turn, can lead to the presentation of your product or service in order to win over your prospect’s business.

I read somewhere that another definition of a prospect is a suspect who engages you in some way by providing you his name, e-mail, and/or phone number via website, pamphlet, catalog, advertisement, etc. Nevertheless he is a prospect who showed interest in your product, service, or opportunity.

This definition applies not only in offline network marketing but also online network marketing. When you send e-mails to your prospects, you are opening that door of communication between you and your target market via electronic means. The rules of prospecting have not changed. It is only the means in which prospecting takes place. For the online network marketer, it is via e-mail marketing.

When that prospect picks up the phone and calls you, you have the opportunity to develop rapport with him and present your opportunity so that you can close the sale either now or at some point in the future.
